Bloody Mary is a folklore legend consisting of a ghost or spirit conjured to reveal the future. She is said to appear in a mirror when her name is called multiple times. The Bloody Mary apparition may be benign or malevolent, depending on historic variations of the legend. The Bloody Mary appearances are mostly “witnessed” in teenage group participation games, often as part of a game of truth or dare.

Historically, the ritual encouraged young women to walk up a flight of stairs backwards while holding a candle and a hand mirror, in a darkened house. As they gazed into the mirror, they were supposed to be able to catch a view of their future husband’s face. There was, however, a chance that they would see a skull (or the face of the Grim Reaper) instead, indicating that they were destined to die before they married.

In the present day, the summoning ritual requires that the lead participant must not look directly for Bloody Mary, but at their own image in the mirror. Variations of the incantation ritual involves: the number of times Bloody Mary’s name is called; spinning (or not) after every repetition of the name; and the adding of the phrase “I’ve got your baby.” The modern ritual addition of taunting Bloody Mary regarding her baby indicates the legendary figure’s tenuous connection to Queen Mary I, also known as “Bloody Mary”, whose life was marked by a number of miscarriages or false pregnancies

Bloody Mary allegedly appears as a corpse, a witch or a ghost; sometimes covered in blood. The lore surrounding the ritual (if she is summoned properly) states that participants may endure the apparition screaming at them, cursing them, strangling them, stealing their body or soul, drinking their blood,or scratching their eyes out

Alta Club, Salt Lake City: A Country Club On Fire

The Alta Club was a social club which had hotel rooms on the top floor in which members could live if they wished. As the story goes, there was a man who fell asleep on the coach with a burning cigar in his hand. It caused a fire in which not only most of the top floor was consumed, but the man died. You can still see some of the soot from the fire above the outside windows on the top floor. Many have seen the man (from which pictures were taken) who died in the fire wandering the halls of the hotel room floors. Mostly he looks at his room and can disappear with a second look. Unexplained but true, there is also a ghost in the basement who touches one lightly on the shoulder. With the ghost comes the strong smell of lilac perfume. Even today the place is still thriving as a refuge from city life for the professional elite, doing its same business since 1883.

Pictured above is Robert, a purportedly cursed doll given to Key West artist Robert Eugene Otto in 1906 by a Bohemian family maid said to practice voodoo. Eugene, a mere six at the time, became at first attached to and then obsessed with the doll, keeping it until his death in 1974.

Eugene’s parents would spot him talking to Robert — and sometimes it seemed like the doll was talking back. In the beginning they believed it was just Eugene disguising his voice to speak for Robert but in time their opinions changed; they would even go on to swear they sometimes heard the doll emit a frightening laugh or saw it darting between rooms. Some nights Eugene would wake up screaming and they would rush to his bedroom to discover the furniture scattered all over and their child, still in bed, yelling “Robert did it!” in a terrified frenzy. Neighbors claimed to see Robert moving in the windows and guests sometimes said they saw his face change expression before their eyes.

When Eugene was older, he took up painting and managed to make a career of it. He would do the lion’s share of his work alone in the house he grew up in and now owned, accompanied always by Robert. By this point he had married a lady named Anne; his wife detested the doll but humored her husband, who would take Robert everywhere with him and insisted that he sleep in a chair by their bed. Eventually Anne tried to give Robert a “room of his own” away from them in the attic, but it didn’t take long for Eugene to insist that Robert was angry with this new arrangement and wanted a bedroom with a proper view.

Robert’s new home became the house’s turret room, where passersby would again claim to see him moving about in the window and watching them as they passed. Eugene, becoming increasingly obsessed and impossible to deal with, eventually locked himself away in the turret room with Robert and ultimately died there with the doll by his side. Finally free, Anne fled from the house.

The house’s next owners discovered Robert tucked away in the attic and the doll fell into the possession of their ten year old daughter. She too would soon begin to wake screaming in the night, claiming to see Robert move and that he would even sometimes try to attack her. Supposedly, she insists to this day that the doll was alive and attempting to murder her.

These days, Robert lives in a locked glass case at the Fort East Martello Museum in Key West. Visitors are warned not to photograph the doll without first politely asking him for permission. As the legend goes, if you don’t ask nicely or if Robert doesn’t agree by tipping his head to one side, he hasn’t deemed you worthy of photographing him and will curse you and your family if you try to…

The Tuesday Haunting: Cherry Hill -

Cherry Hill was a neighborhood in the old Fourth Ward of the Lower East Side of Manhattan, which became infamous for the worst tenement slum in the city, Gotham Court. However, in 1900, a three-room flat on Cherry Street gained brief notoriety for being haunted. According to reports, for 19 years, even in overcrowded NYC, no tenant had been able to remain within the flat longer than a few hours before terrifying disturbances began: pictures turned upside down on the walls, furniture moved, residents were physical assaults. The poltergeist activity was believed due to the spirit of an old French woman, a widow who committed suicide by hanging herself following her husband’s death. This location shouldn’t be confused with the Cherry Hill estate in Albany, which is also supposed to be haunted.

The story began with housekeeper Lupe Moncivais, who claimed she first came across the spirit haunting the room in 1979 or 1980 after the death of a young woman from a drug overdose in November of that year. She heard a voice whispering her name and her hair was pulled, but she was alone at the time.

Following the report, the hotel was deluged with requests to reserve the haunted room for the night. Guests reported other phenomena such as the elevators stopping on the fifth floor by themselves, faucets in Room 538 turning on and off, and a “woman in white” was seen entering the unoccupied room.

During that time 400 tons of pig iron were produced daily. In 1971 the furnace ceased production and closed its doors.

In 1981 the Sloss Furnace became one of the first industrial sites to be preserved for public use, and was put on the list as a National Historical Landmark. Today, it also serves as a museum of industry, has a metal arts program, and has earned its place as one of America’s Most Haunted Places.

What is the cause of the hauntings at this site? Many believe the site is haunted by a former sadistic foreman James ‘Slag’ Wormwood. He was foreman to about 150 workers. On his watch, 47 men lost their lives on the job and many others were injured due to accidents. James Wormwood also lost his life on the job. He feel into a pool of melted iron ore after loosing his footing. There was speculation that one of the workers may have pushed him, but nothing could ever be proven. A total of 60 men lost their lives at the furnace while working.

After his death and accident many workers reported feeling a sense of evil in the furnaces. Strange noises, foot steps, and voices have all been heard. A night watchman in the 1920’s claims to have encountered Slag. While on his watch he was pushed hard from behind and heard a voice telling him ‘Get back to work!’. He searched the grounds but never did find the source of the voice.

In 1947 another strange event occurred. Three supervisors were touring the facility when their guide turned to them to point something out he discovered that they were gone. A frantic search found them unconscious and locked in a boiler room. Strangely enough none of the men could remember how they had gotten there, but all agreed that a badly burned man yelling ‘push some steel!’ was the one who put them there. To date over 100 suspected reports of paranormal activity have been recorded in Birmingham police records.

libertarianandy:

St Mark’s Episcopal Church, Cheyenne: A Bell Tower For A Spirit

This church dates back to the year of 1868 and the work on the bell tower started in 1886, but was not continued until 1926. It seems that the two Swedish stonemasons who were working on the bell tower mysteriously disappeared. Construction halted many a time because it seemed that a spirit kept interrupting the workers when they were hard at work. This was at the point in which the construction crew decided that it would probably be a good idea to build a room for the spirit so that it may leave them in peace. It was agreed upon by the reverend. The room is still accessible, but you must take the basement down a flight of an 85 foot spiral staircase. Good luck with that. Who was the ghost? It was confessed by one of the stonemasons in 1966 that his friend who had been working with him in 1886 had fallen to his death. The remaining stonemason believing that he might be accused of murder panicked and put his friend’s body in an open part of the foundation. So, the stonemason is encased somewhere in there, but at least he has his own room.

Bhoot -

An Indian ghost, a bhoot is the spirit of a person who did not receive a proper burial or died a violent death. They are able to take the form of any animal but they usually prefer their true human form. Since the ground is considered sacred in India bhoots refuse to touch it and usually float above the ground. The most obvious trait of a bhoot is the fact that their feet are backwards. They also cast no shadow and speak in a nasal tone. Like other ghosts it is possible for a bhoot to haunt a house or location but it is also said that they haunt particular trees while wearing all white clothing.

Bhoots are often seen as malicious spirits. They will seek out milk and hide themselves in it. When the milk is drunk by a living human the bhoot possesses the person. Another type of bhoot is a churial. These are the spirits of women who died during childbirth. They wait at crossroads and lure young men to their deaths.

It is impossible to kill or destroy a bhoot. It is possible to repel or ward them off using a variety of different methods; these include using iron or steel to frighten them off, the scent of burnt turmeric, invoking the name of a holy figure to repel them or sprinkling earth on yourself. It is also impossible to exorcise a bhoot, the only ritual that can get rid of them is one that promises to give the bhoot a proper burial and that you will do whatever it wants. The haunting only stops when it gets whatever it is after.

The Crossroads -

The crossroads is usually seen as a “no-man’s land” which makes it the perfect spot to perform a ritual, spell or to make a makeshift altar. It is seen as the place between worlds where the boundaries between our world and others is the thinnest, which is why it is so common for supernatural happenings to occur at a crossroads.

In voodoo and hoodoo spiritualism it is possible to achieve great skill in a task by performing a ritual at a crossroads. It’s said that a man dressed in black will appear and grant you the desired skill you wished for.

The black man is known as Papa Legbra who is a loa. A loa is like an angel but unlike angels they have to be served, not just prayed to, and they usually come with a price. In some stories Papa Legbra will lead humans into temptation but in all tales he is very aggressive when angered. He is usually appears as an old man dressed in black and wearing a wide brimmed hat. He is known to keep dogs and they are sacred to him.

In European folklore people who committed murder or suicide were buried at the crossroads to prevent them from returning from the grave.
